The Momma Cat and the Three Little Kittens ...

Momma cat was a stray that showed up pregnant on her owner’s doorstep, just begging to be made into a pet. She was loving and cuddly and almost ready to give birth.

Momma cat went into labor late one evening and easily had 2 kittens. The third kitten gave her some trouble and eventually became lodged in the birth canal. When Momma cat arrived at Orchard View Veterinary Center, the kitten was deceased.

We assisted in the removal of the deceased kitten and took an x-ray to see if Momma Cat had any more kittens left to be born. The x-ray showed there was still one more kitten inside her!  At this point she was tired, hungry and her uterus had stopped contracting. We put her and her babies into a cage, fed her some canned food and gave her an injection to start uterine contractions.

About an hour later a small, male, orange kitten was born!  He was strong and immediately began nursing.

Interesting to note, the x-rays show that at some point in her past, Momma Cat suffered a fracture of her right hind femur- most likely due to being hit by a car- that healed at an awkward angle. You would never know this from watching her walk!
Momma cat and her three little kittens went home the same day and are doing well at home. Although these kittens were welcomed into the world and will be adopted out to loving homes, there are millions of cats euthanized every year because nobody wants them. Help prevent unwanted animals from suffering the same fate by spaying and neutering your pets at a young age.
